چکیده

Understanding of various charging processes of dust grains is important in many different industrial applications as well as in the space research and theoretical studies of charging. An impact of energetic ions onto a dust grain leads to transfer of charge to the grain. This effect increases the charge of the dust grain until an equilibrium value is reached. After charging, the ion beam is switched off, the grain is spontaneously discharging. The discharging current can be attributed to field ionization of a gas surrounding the grain or ion field evaporation of the grain material and thus it would be a function of the surface field intensity. However, our previous study indicated that the main process discharging the dust grain is the field ion desorption of beam ions deposited on the grain surface. This paper enhances mentioned studies. We used a spherical Au grain charged by the beam of He ions. We have found that the discharging current strongly depends on the structure of the grain surface (especially, on the bonding energy of beam ions on the grain surface), not only on the surface field intensity.

Influence of Charging Conditions on Dust Grain’s Field Ion Emission

The research of charging processes of various types of dust grains is important for understanding of the role of dust in dusty plasmas in a space as well as in applications. One of the very important charging process is field ion emission. The field ion emission can limit the positive charge on the dust grain because the positive ions leave a grain surface due to a strong electric field. We ana...

Ion Field Emission from Micron-sized Carbon Dust Grains

Ion field emission from dust grains was studied using several glassy carbon grains of different radii from 1.64 to 2.97 μm as dust samples. Each grain was stored in a quadrupole trap under UHV conditions for a long time (days) and charged by argon ions to a high surface potential. When the ion gun was switched off the charged grain started to discharge spontaneously. We found out that the disch...

An Assessment of Wind Erosion Schemes in Dust Emission Simulations over the Middle East

Extended abstract 1- INTRODUCTION        Atmospheric aerosols, solid and liquid particles in the atmosphere, play a crucial role in the atmospheric radiation equilibrium. These particles have an influence on the scattering and absorption of short wavelength radiation, and on the other hand, affect radiation absorption and emission in long wavelengths. Dust particles are among the importan...

Depth Profiles of Ions Implanted into Spherical Dust Grains—a TRIM Based Model

Dust in the space and in laboratory experiments is often exposed to energetic ions. During this process, the ions are implanted into the grain. The grain can collect a significant charge that is spontaneously released due to ion field emission. To support the results of laboratory experiments on ion field emission, we adapted a TRIM-code (developed originally for a study of planar surfaces) on ...

Numerical and Synoptic Study of Emission, Transport and Identify Potential Sources of a Severe Dust Storm Over Middle East

One of the powerful tools in dust storms analysis that have recently found extensive application is atmospheric-chemistry numerical modeling. Spatial and temporal distribution of Middle Eastern dust for a severe dust event during 4-8 July 2009 was analyzed by Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF/Chem) model simulations and remote sensing observations. The HYSPLIT model is applie...
